I don't know if you've heard, but a calorie deficit is pretty important when wanting to lose weight.
Simply because:
If you’re not losing weight, you’re not in an energy deficit.
So why are people convinced they’re in that coveted deficit but can’t seem to lose weight?
Here’s why:
👉 They’re Eating More Than They Think They Are 👈
It’s been repeatedly shown that people consistently underreport their calorie intake.
Whether that's straightforward tracking mistakes, ignoring the odd mouthful here and there, or not appreciating how much they’re actually consuming, overeating is a prime reason for mistakenly believing they should be losing weight.
👉 They’re Burning Fewer Calories Than They Think They Are 👈
Running counter to the energy ‘in’ side of the energy balance equation is the energy ‘out’ part.
Jogging, running, walking, and lifting weights all burn fewer calories than people perceive.
Add to that the reduced muscle mass they think they possess, and it’s no wonder people aren’t burning as many calories as they think they are.
👉 A Reduced Metabolic Rate 👈
Weight loss is simple at first: eat less, and you lose weight.
Unfortunately, the longer this process goes on, the slower people’s metabolism runs, meaning the calorie intake they were once adhering to is no longer a deficit but maintenance.
Failing to adjust caloric intake as body weight, fat mass, and energy expenditure decrease reduces the likelihood of remaining in that energy deficit.
👉 They’re Not As Consistent As They Think They Are 👈
Being in a calorie deficit for four or five days of the week but then overshooting into a surplus over the weekend is a sure-fire way to miss out on any fat loss for the week.
Your body doesn’t know the difference between a Tuesday and a Sunday, and so believing that some days, meals, or events ‘don’t count,’ or they can ‘return to normal on Monday,’ is simply ensuring they’re no longer in a calorie deficit.
